A powerful wine, this is only the fourth reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ever made by Abeja. Thick, black and redolent of new French oak, this is as close to a Napa Valley cult Cabernet as you will find this far north. The alcohol, which nears 16%, is beautifully handled and proportionate, but the wine’s style is over the top and not suited to every palate. Mostly old (1972) Bacchus vineyard fruit is 100% Cabernet, and only the second reserve Cabernet ever produced by Abeja. It’s dark, juicy, dense, smoky, layered and tight. Pepper, bacon, coffee grounds, graphite and black cherry roll through the palate, buttressed with lots of firm, smooth, polished and delicious tannins. A truly glorious bottle. ——P.G.(8/1/2009)—— 96
