Licorice, over-ripe honeydew melon, sultanas, candied grapefruit rind and heliotrope in the nose of Eva Clusserath’s 2007 Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Beerenauslese lead to a palate of creamy texture and liqueur-like richness, with strong elements of caramel and shriveled berries, finishing with a prickly heat of botrytis spice and candied citrus zest. A 2005 Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Beerenauslese culled from the same picking as the Auslese displays much more overt botrytis character, being thick, creamy, and oily in texture, and possessed of an ethereally sweet, honeyed aroma and flavor, but without much fresh fruit. Instead, caramelized orchard fruits are the prime movers, and the pace is slow and stately.
