Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Merlot features notions of plum preserves, red currant jelly and mulberries with hints of spice cake, smoked meats and underbrush with a touch of wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers fantastic tension with lively acidity and plush tannins framing the black fruit flavors, finishing with an herbal lift.

Deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Merlot has a captivating nose of crushed red and black plums, Black Forest cake and underbrush with hints of spice cake and dried mint. Full-bodied, plushly textured and packed with warm black fruits and baking spices in the mouth, it has a long peppery finish.

Blended with 7% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Merlot has a red currants, kirsch and plum preserves nose with a spicy undercurrent and waft of forest floor and truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate shows good concentration with chewy tannins and an herbal lift to the finish.

From the famed Hudson Vineyard, the 2013 Merlot tips the scales at nearly 15% alcohol and shows beautiful dark raspberry, chocolate and berry fruit, a lush, opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity and exceptional balance. There is not a trace of heat in the long, lusty hedonistic finish. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

Hatton has turned out a beautiful 2006 Merlot. This 100% Merlot exhibits that varietal’s chocolate fudge, espresso roast, and mocha characteristics along with a hint of truffles and loads of berry fruit. One of the top Merlots being made in California’s North Coast, it should drink beautifully for 12-15 years. Some of California’s more innovative wines emerge from proprietor Fritz Hatton, the well-known auctioneer who is also a classical pianist. Hatton has been expanding his portfolio with each new vintage, and it appears his blended cuvees turn out more interesting than the varietal wines. Usually a blend of 55-60% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot is the proprietary red wine from the H Block of the Hudson Vineyard.
