The Piazzo Comm. Armando 2017 Barbera d'Alba Mugiot is a terrific option if you are looking for a soft, sultry and fruit-forward wine from Piedmont to pair with a classic wild boar tagliatelle. The fruit is extra supple and sweet in this hot and dry vintage. Those growing conditions produced smaller, darker berries, and you taste that sun-fueled concentration as a result. Black fruit and crème de cassis transition to earthy tones of potting soil and spice. A modest 5,000 bottles were made.

The 2016 Barbera d'Alba Mugiot is inky black in appearance, almost impenetrable, and has much to reveal once you give it a few moments to open in the glass. This expression has depth and tightness at the core. You do notice the 14.5% alcohol, which adds to the overall power. It is aged in oak for 12 months and both French and American wood is used. Some 6,000 bottles are made.
