The 2008 Ode to Picasso emerges from the glass with an exotic bouquet of incense, tar, tobacco and sweet spices. It is one of the more linear wines in this lineup, yet it impresses for its length and classiness. There are elements of darkness and introspection here that makes this a fascinating, contemplative wine. Ode to Picasso is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah and 10% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. I was very impressed with the wines I tasted from Behrens Family Winery. These bold, racy wines are long on exuberance and sheer personality.Tel. A 265-case blend of 54% Merlot, 25% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah, the impressively concentrated 2004 B and H Ode to Picasso offers hints of charcoal, graphite, black raspberries, blueberries, and cherries. The complex aromatics are followed by a wine with terrific fruit, a lush, opulent attack and mid-palate, and a heady finish. This beautiful red should drink nicely for 5-7 years. The Dead Cat cuvee ... oh, I’m sorry, I mean the 2001 Ode To Picasso (their homage to a deceased pet) is a blend of 40% Syrah, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot (who thinks up these blends?). No European producer would dare mix all this stuff together because of ... tradition ... but these disrespectful adult hippies got it right. It’s all about creativity, singularity, and producing awesome wines ... like this one. Incredible aromas of creosote, blackberries, creme de cassis, acacia flowers, and underbrush soar from the glass. Superb texture, great purity (a characteristics of all B and H wines), and terrific length characterize this wine. It will be impossible to resist over the next 10-15 years. Go for it! I admire what Les Behrens, Bob Hitchcock, their wives, friends, and lunatic dog are doing at their winery and cellars on the top of Spring Mountain.
