The 2002 Merlot Las Amigas Vineyard is a great example of a wine that is significantly better from bottle. This sensational 300-case offering boasts full-throttle notes of toffee, mocha, black cherry liqueur, and a hint of smoky blackberries. Full-bodied and unctuously-textured, with superb fruit, wonderful density, and low acidity, this is a plump, fleshy Merlot to drink over the next 7-8 years. I can’t say enough good things about Behrens and Hitchcock. This is the type of winery operation that gives hope to aspiring home winemakers who want to make it in the big time.
