The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is a compelling effort. There are 245 cases of this 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot blend. Sweet notes of creme de cassis intermixed with licorice, pipe smoke, and toasty new oak gush from the glass of this full-bodied, unctuously-textured Cabernet. It possesses tremendous inner-strength as well as a mid-palate in which one could get lost. This frighteningly rich, concentrated yet structured 2001 is classic mid-Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. How do these people do it? Anticipated maturity: 2008-2022. My favorite of the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated cuvees is the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (650 cases). It is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine boasts a saturated purple color in addition to gorgeous aromas of acacia flowers mixed with licorice, creme de cassis, smoke, and minerals. It is ripe, full-bodied, and sweet.
