The inky/purple-colored 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard (from Napa Valley’s tenderloin section, the Oakville Corridor) exhibits classic aromas of creme de cassis, new saddle leather, coffee, tobacco leaf, blackberries, and smoky oak. Opulent, viscous, and full-bodied, with extraordinary concentration as well as purity, it should be monumental stuff. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. I admire what Les Behrens, Bob Hitchcock, their wives, friends, and lunatic dog are doing at their winery and cellars on the top of Spring Mountain. A potentially prodigious wine is the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard. From a vineyard located next to the famed To-Kalon Vineyard of Robert Mondavi, it boasts an opaque black/purple color as well as an awesome nose of spice box, black fruits, toast, and mineral. The wine is remarkably rich, full-bodied, and pure, with multiple layers of flavor, sweet tannin, low acidity, and a finish that goes on for a good 45+ seconds. There are 325 cases of this wine that was finished at 15.4% alcohol. Many of the vineyards they draw from are frequently cropped at 5-6 tons, but Les Behrens and Bob Hitchcock reduce yields by 50%.
