Here's a well-priced blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Sagrantino. The Tenuta Bellafonte 2019 Montefalco Rosso Pomontino shows dark fruit and black plum that are padded by savory tones of spice, cardamom, cola, licorice and a hint of dried rosemary sprig. From a classic vintage that naturally produced concentrated wines, this expression shows less primary fruit and more balsamic tones instead. However, this wine is generally balanced and interesting. This is a release of 16,000 bottles.

Pretty, simple and stripped down, with elegant intensity overall, the 2018 Montefalco Rosso Pomontino delivers dried cherry and garden herb with earth and rusty nail. With more swirls of the glass, it comes together to find better balance and focus and is nicely subdued in the end. It took me a while to come around to this one, but it is a pleasant surprise. Exactly 14,153 bottles were made.
