Produced from 60 to 80-year-old vines, the medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes has intense red and black cherry aromas. This wine has excellent concentration and depth to its sweet red fruit and candied blueberry-flavored core. It is extremely flavorful and has a long, fruit-filled, supple finish. This wine is medium-to-dark ruby-colored and intense. Iron, mineral, and sweet blackberry aromas give way to its extracted, concentrated, structured, medium-to-full-bodied, rich, and deep character. This Chassagne offers scrumptious red and black fruits intermingled with stones. Aditionally, it has the power and backbone to evolve gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2004+. Bernard Morey's Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes is produced from vines that average 50 years in age. Bernard Morey and his sons crafted seven lovely 1996 red Burgundies, many from old vines. Produced from 35 to 70 year old vines, the dark ruby-colored Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes displays intense mineral and sweet red berry aromas. It has a well-concentrated, highly-structured, rustic, medium-to-full-bodied personality with cherries and roasted herb flavors. The wine's admirable length ends on a slightly hard tannic finish (typical for many red Chassagnes). Anticipated maturity: 1999-2004. Note: The price for this wine was not available because the domaine's US importer does not purchase it. The wine may, however, be available through other sources, particularly the gray market. The bottling line was churning away when I visited this estate in January and many of the wines I tasted had been bottled but were not yet corked.
