A plush texture carries rich flavors of kirsch, chocolate, soy and smoke, supported by muscular tannins that soften on the finish to leave a jammy cherry and cinnamon finish. The 2004 Cyan Pago de la Calera comes from a 1.5-hectare namesake vineyard planted back in 1928 and sees 18 months in new French oak. It has a well-defined bouquet that handles the 15.5% oak well, offering scents of raspberry preserve, crushed strawberry, marmalade and camphor. The palate is full-bodied with a sweet core of plump raspberry and strawberry fruit laced with vanilla, marmalade and orange zest. The finish is grippy and missing a little refinement, although it is certainly packed full of flavor and the alcohol is not imposing. This is a well-crafted, seductive Toro red. The 2002 Pago de la Calera was aged for 18 months in French oak. Inky purple, it delivers a nose of earth, violets, leather, mineral, and blackberry. On the palate the wine is a bit lacking in concentration although the flavors are stylish, It will evolve for 2-3 years and drink well through 2015.
