The creamy, balsamic and oaky 2012 Reserva Selecta, pure Tempranillo aged in new American oak barrels for 22 months, has a juicy palate with abundant, fine-grained tannins and good balance. It has a faint animal character. Only 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2014.

The 2010 Reserva Selecta was closed and serious and took time to start unfurling its black fruit, licorice, spices and graphite. The palate is quite compact, with fine-grained tannins and good freshness. Quite impressive. 65,000 bottles.

A plush texture carries savory flavors of smoke, tobacco, and earth, while a core of cherry fruit keeps this balanced. The juicy acidity brings you back for another sip. Drink now through 2015. 12,500 cases made.??–TM??Region: Spain / Rioja Select to Add

The 2005 Reserva Selecta is a pure Tempranillo from the “Villa Luca” vineyard aged in American oak for 22 months. The nose unfurls nicely in the glass, offering red currant, crushed strawberry and leather and later, a touch of mocha. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm backbone, smooth in texture, but missing just a little complexity towards the finish. Drink now-2017. Bodegas Campillo is part of Grupo Faustino and is headed by Julio Faustino Martinez. I tasted two perfectly commendable Reservas, although I suggest that their prices need to be more competitive.
