The 1998 Pago Cuesta Clara Raro is bottled only in magnum and double magnum. The grapes come from an 18.5 acre vineyard planted in 50-year-old Tempranillo Peludo, a nearly extinct clone. The wine spent 27 months in small French oak. Aromatically, this is easily the most exotic of the four Campillo wines, wild berries, vanilla, and licorice all making an appearance. This is the most structured of these wines as well as the most concentrated and fleshy. How much it might improve is difficult to say but it is drinking beautifully now and should last another 12-15 years.
Bodegas Campillo was built in 1990 by Julio Faustino Martinez, the owner of Bodegas Faustino, for the purpose of creating limited production, hand-crafted wines. The wines come from a 125 acre vineyard in the Laguardia region of the Rioja Alavesa. These are traditionally styled Riojas in the best sense of that word.
