The 2016 Orballo is an Albari?o sourced from La Val's higher altitude vineyards complemented by some grapes from younger vines. The three wines from 2016 have a very similar fruit-driven, clean and light profile with notes of white fruit and freshly cut grass. The palate is balanced with some sweetness on the finish. 80,000 bottles produced.

The 2014 Orballo is Albari?o sourced from their higher altitude vineyards. The nose might have a tad more freshness, but in general is quite similar and shares the profile with the other two Albari?os in the very similar price range. The palate is quite light, fresh with some faint herbal flavors. 80,000 bottles were produced.

80% of the grapes for the 2013 Orballo is Albari?o are sourced from their younger vineyards, a young and fresh white which fermented in stainless steel and was bottled early. Bright, clean and shiny, with aromas of flowers, quite subtle has a light to medium-bodied palate with some fresh, herbal and citric flavors with good acidity. 50,000 bottles were produced.

The 2011 Orballo comes exclusively from the estate’s Pexegueiro vineyard, where just five hectares were planted in 2001. It has a superb, mineral-rich bouquet that is very fine delineation, the granitic soil translated with clarity. The palate is well- balanced with a citric entry, and has a tense finish with hints of orange zest and white peach. This represents great value. Drink now-2017. I visited Bodegas La Val, which lies in close proximity to the River Mino and the Spain/Portugual border. It was one of the appellation’s first sizeable estates – in fact, the original owner at the time was decried as “crazy” when he purchased his first of three vineyards, some 35 hectares that is still considerable to this day.
