The very oaky 2015 Polus Tempranillo also had some ink and licorice aromas and a palate full of dry, dusty tannins. It needs food.

The 2012 Polus Tempranillo is a special cuvée from old vineyards fermented in new open barrels for 14 days, followed by malolactic in those barrels with daily battonage for two months and a further 12 months aging. The nose is invaded by aromas of tempera paint, fountain pen ink, licorice and animal fur. The palate feels quite dried out. Too animal. 8,500 bottles produced.

On the other hand, the 2011 Polus Tempranillo has a strong imprint from the oak, with a toasted profile and some austerity in the palate, high acidity and fine-grained tannins, not so expressive, but clean, balanced and well made. However, it should age well. Drink 2015-2020. This 150,000-bottle family business is run by Loli Casado, the third generation of winegrowers in the Rioja Alavesa with a base of 25 hectares of vineyards in Lapuebla de Labarca and Laguardia, 45% of which were planted by her grandfather 60-80 years ago, 55% by her father and the remaining 10% were planted in 1999. In 2004, they built a new winery and increased the number of wines offered, which are produced in a clean, modern style and offered at very good prices. Various American importers, Cognac One, Spanish Vineyard Imports, Vitis Imports, Atlanta Improvement Company and Symposiums Brands.

The 2010 Polus Tempranillo is sourced from 75-year-old vines, and fermented in open casks for two weeks before being transferred into French oak for malolactic, where it spends 12 months. It has a well-defined bouquet of damson and blackberry that disguises the oak efficiently. The palate is very supple and silky smooth on the entry with plush dark cherry, strawberry and spice on the middle and fans out towards its lush finish. It would benefit from more structure and backbone, but it is a well-made Tempranillo. Drink now-2016. Bodegas Loli Casado is a family-run winery that owns 25 hectares of vine in Alavesa, the oldest of which were planted more than 75-years ago. They produce a set of commendable wines and a couple of great ones under the “Jaun de Alzate” line. It is a shame that these are not presently imported into the United States. No known US importer.
