For several years we’ve been impressed with this under-$10 Merlot, and this year the quality and purity are once again exemplary. Aromas of smoke, mineral and sweet leather set the stage for amplified cherry, raspberry, plum and chocolate flavors. Dried herbs accent creamy mocha and black cherries in a supple, harmonious whole that’s as true to the variety as can be. This Merlot is quite dark, with plentiful black plum, anise and toasty oak aromas and flavors. Medium-weight and nicely balanced, it’s smooth and jammy, yet avoids the sweet or candied quality of so many warm-climate wines.
