The 2011 JME has a more subtle, finer nose that requires some coaxing to start showing notes of licorice, black pepper and prunes. The 2008 J.M.E. Tempranillo is sourced from 30-year-old bush vines and is raised in American and French oak for seven months. It has a light, plum and cassis-scented bouquet that seems rather pinched. The palate is juicy and fleshy on the entry with crisp strawberry and red cherry flavors. The 2007 JME spent 5 months in new French and American oak. More deeply colored than the preceding wines, it offers plenty of up-front fruit, pepper, clove, and cinnamon spice notes, and ample black cherry fruit. The wine is nicely concentrated and well balanced, meant for drinking over the next 6-8 years. Bodegas Muriel is the third largest landowner in Rioja with all of the following wines produced from 100% Tempranillo.
