The 2006 Reserva is a Tempranillo with a 10% field blend and sees 18 months aging in French and American oak. It has a broody bouquet of dark cherries, licorice and plum jam laced with cocoa and a touch of mint. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, tensile tannins and a silky smooth finish that leads with a citric edge, followed by wild strawberry and tart red cherries. Drink now-2020. Named after the village in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria in Rioja Alavesa, Castillo Labastida was established when a group of growers took over a winery that was originally the homestead of Manuel Quintano, an influential figure in 18th century Rioja winemaking. The 2005 Reserva is a ripe, savory wine with a plush palate feel, good depth, and plenty of succulent fruit. It has enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years and will drink at its best from 2012 to 2020. Opens with leather and rubber and quickly moves to dry cherry, spice and balsam wood. The palate is balanced and healthy, with fairly thick and meaty plum and berry flavors cut by proper acids. Long on the finish, with a tobacco note and lasting berry length.——M.S.(12/15/2011)—— 88
