A nice choice for a buttery lobster, the Borgo del Tiglio 2017 Collio Friulano (white label) is a terrific wine that offers an authentic sense of place and draws a precise portrait of this versatile, indigenous grape. There's so much transparency here, you can almost smell the compacted sandstone characteristic of Friuli's Ponca soils and the soft breezes that bring salinity and wild aromas along from the Adriatic. The biggest asset of this wine is its startling freshness and liveness. Citrus, pear and quince are delivered over a mid-weight, creamy mouthfeel. About 5,000 bottles were made.

The 2010 Friulano shows off gorgeous inner sweetness and perfume. The aromas and flavors are quite pointed and delineated in this attractive white. Mint, flowers and ripe, juicy pears wrap around the inviting finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. My wife and I sat down for a late summer dinner at L’Androna, the best restaurant in Grado, a gorgeous seaside town in Friuli. I had just returned the day before from two weeks in Burgundy, where I tasted just about every great 2009 white Burgundy, including virtually all of the benchmarks. Within that context, the next white I tasted should have been disappointing. Instead it was a revelation. The wine? Borgo del Tiglio’s 2009 old-vine Friulano Ronco della Chiesa. On this night, the Ronco della Chiesa was every bit the equal of the vast majority of the wines I tasted in Burgundy, and frankly far better than the average. Proprietor Nicola Manferrari is one of the leading lights in Friuli. His wines deserve far more recognition than they typically receive. The 2009 Friulano is an unsually refined white laced with peaches, mint, flowers and minerals. Crushed rocks and smoke develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance all the way through to the polished finish. The 2009 Friulano is an unusually round, refined wine at this level. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. Proprietor Nicola Manferrari has few peers in Friuli, or Italy for that matter. This is a gorgeous set of truly exceptional world-class whites. As always, the only issue is finding the wines. It would be great to see Borgo del Tiglio gain more traction in the US.
