This special wine is released once every three years or so. The 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages were not produced, and at the time of my visit to the estate last year, the jury was still out regarding possible production of 2015 and 2016. But the 2011 Collio Rosso della Centa (a pure expression of Merlot) is in the market now, and it is beautiful, fresh and bright. Both sample bottles I tasted showed beautiful intensity with some mild herbal definition, licorice and wild berry. This is a delicate work of elegance, both streamlined and silky. The exciting cherry-berry intensity you get on first nose is dazzling, but the wine reveals many more layers of spice and mineral to follow. The grapes are fermented in open-top oak casks, and the wine is aged in French barrique for four years. A mere 1,200 bottles were produced.

During my visit to Borgo del Tiglio, proprietor Nicola Manferrari kindly offered to open a few back vintages of his Merlot Rosso della Centa and other older selections from his cellars. The offer soon blossomed into a serious vertical tasting with more than a dozen wines that make a strong argument for the cellar-aging potential of this estate's reds and its whites. The experience was unforgettable. The 2006 Collio Rosso della Centa is another beautiful edition of this important and rarely released wine. This vintage might be considered musical and operatic in character, with bright berry notes yielding to more evolved arias of licorice and medicinal herbs. There is complete harmony and silkiness here in another gem from Borgo del Tiglio's cellar.

The estate’s 2006 Rosso della Centa is one of the most overlooked reds in Italy, but in top years it has the ability to age exquisitely. Deceptively medium in body, the Rosso della Centa bursts from the glass with layers of dark red berries, grilled herbs, spices and espresso, showing remarkable tension between the ripeness of its fruit and the tautness of its underlying structure. Clean mineral notes frame the long, silky finish. This is another standout from Borgo del Tiglio. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. Proprietor Nicola Manferrari has few peers in Friuli, or Italy for that matter. This is a gorgeous set of truly exceptional world-class whites. As always, the only issue is finding the wines. The 2001 Collio Rosso della Centa has aged very well over nearly two decades. If delicate and fragile, dainty notes of violets hide in the bouquet among other floral tones. The tannins are very well balanced and silky. But the defining characteristic of this bottle is that lasting whiff of wild rose that encapsulates the delicate and floral nature of this vintage. It's a beautiful wine that sees fruit sourced from a small vineyard on the southwest side of the San Giorgio hill with ancient dry walls that hold the steep terraces steady and strong.

The 1999 Rosso della Centa, which has set the pace in Friuli ever since 1982, is almost entirely Merlot, and the wine, oddly enough, is more structured than the blend with the Cabernet. Full, concentrated, and plushy, it is very ripe and expressive on the nose, plummy and ample, rich and velvety in flavor, elegant and very long in flow and finish.
