A blend of mostly Friulano with Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, the green-labeled Borgo del Tiglio 2017 Collio Studio di Bianco is one of the iconic white wines of northeast Italy, with only 900 bottles released. This estate has the Midas Touch, especially when it comes to nailing that perfect balance between aromatic purity and a multidimensional, almost creamy mouthfeel. You get intensity across the board, and the blend is so carefully contemplated, no one side pulls harder than the other. Seamless balance is achieved even in a difficult vintage such as this. Orchard fruit, preserved lemon and Italian pastry crust give this wine a beautiful aromatic presentation.

The 2016 Collio Studio di Bianco is a carefully contemplated blend of 45% Friulano, 35% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Riesling (with 2,300 bottles produced). The wine is packaged in the dark green label reserved for Borgo del Tiglio's top-shelf expressions. This wine sees fruit sourced from the Ruttars vineyard with light gray calcareous marl soils, and most of the vines were planted before 1989 when this parcel was purchased. The grapes are harvested on the same day and pressed together. The resulting bouquet is extremely smooth and seamless with pear and peach aromas that transition directly to anise seed and a touch of diesel fuel. What stands out most is the structure, firmness and power of the wine (at 15% alcohol) that gives you the possibility of pairing this white wine as if it were a red, with roast chicken or a fatty fish dish.

The 2015 Collio Studio di Bianco opens to a deep golden color with greenish highlights that shine from deep within. That luminosity is just beautiful. Three grapes are used in the blend—Sauvignon, Friulano and Riesling Renano, all planted in the estate's Ruttars vineyard. The grapes are harvested and processed together, thus creating a difficult balance in which the attributes of one variety are pitted against the other two. For example, the Sauvignon and the Riesling add the acidity necessary to balance out the Friulano that ends up being harvested later than normal. This is a robust and creamy expression that wraps thickly over the palate with stone fruit, white flowers and marine breeze aromas.

A blend of 50% Friulano, 30% Sauvignon and 20% Riesling, the 2013 Collio Studio di Bianco represents a tremendous effort. This is an exceptionally pristine and immaculate white blend that delivers a beautiful presentation in terms of appearance, bouquet and mouthfeel. The wine shows determined aromas of white rose, jasmine, honeysuckle and passion fruit. Yet, the mouthfeel offers the thickness and smoothness of texture to leave a lasting impression. This is a deeply impressive white wine.

The 2012 Collio Studio di Bianco (a blend of Sauvignon, Friulano and Riesling Renano) offers an accessible and slightly oxidative bouquet with stone peach, poached pear and a touch of candied butterscotch. This is a full and generous wine from a warm vintage that reveals good concentration and richness over a mid-weight palate. There's a flash of cantaloupe melon-like sweetness on the close. The mouthfeel is layered and succulent. Drink this wine within the next 5 years or so.
