The 2001 Nebbiolo d’Alba Cumot, made just outside the Barolo production zone, competes with many a wine from the more famous appellation. Its floral, balsamic, and smoky nose, its fine extract, definition, and depth of flavor are those of Nebbiolo of true class. A bit backward and tight at the moment (understandably so – Barolo is now releasing the 1999 vintage), this is a wine whose score could easily go higher when it rounds into its final shape. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2016.
