The Casale dello Sparviero 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva (with 50,000 bottles made) is all Sangiovese aged in oak for 18 months. Grapes are sourced from across 80 hectares of vines with predominantly clay soils at a moderate elevation of 250 meters above sea level. The summer heat tends to get trapped at the lower altitudes, and this wine does show raspberry jam and strawberry confit as a result. I suggest a near-term drinking window for this accessible wine.

With the pretty image of a sparrow hawk on the front label, the Casale dello Sparviero 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva shows dark fruit, spice, earth and an open or accessible approach that fits squarely in line with the characteristics of Castellina in Chianti, the subregion that I associate with bright sunshine and open landscapes. There is much beauty for the sparrow hawk to observe from its soaring heights. This wine offers lots of dark fruit that is intermingled with savory rosemary. Grill up a sirloin for this one.

Here’s a ripe and velvety Riserva with luscious, warm tones of dark spice, chocolate, tobacco smoke and root beer. The wine is fresh and crisp in the mouth with firm structure and very good density.——M.L.(6/1/2009)—— 91
