The Mencía red 2021 Hombros was produced with grapes from the paraje Valdaiga in Valtuille de Arriba. It fermented with uncrushed grapes and matured in rolling 225- and 500-liter oak barrels with the lees. Despite the moderate alcohol, 13.5%, the sensation is quite-ripe fruit and generous sweet spices. It's medium-bodied with fine tannins and a tasty and long finish. 21,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.

The showy and intoxicating 2019 Hombros is floral and perfumed, heady and ripe at 14.5% alcohol, in a decadent style that is still well-oaked but less than in the past. The destemmed but uncrushed grapes fermented in 5,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels, some of them new, for 12 months. It has ripe notes of dark berries, soy sauce and earth. The palate is full-bodied, with plenty of tannins. It finishes with some oak flavors. 15,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2021.

The oakiest of the reds was the 2015 Hombros, which resembled a wine from Ribera del Duero. The palate showed very dry, with bumpy tannins and an astringent finish. It didn't show any Mencía character as it was all about the barrel. For fans of oaky reds. 16,000 bottles.

The 2012 Hombros (shoulders) is Mencía sourced from the mid-slopes of Valtuille de Arriba, where you have a mix of clay on the valley floor, and more minerals and stones on the hillside tops. After one year in used French barriques, this 2012 had an extra aging of one more year in a 5,100-liter oak vat. The nose denotes very high ripeness, and something organic. The winery tends to harvest quite late, and the ripeness is quite obviously high. That is also translated into more fruit and a forward character. For fans of ripe reds. 13,398 bottles and 431 magnums were filled unusually late, in July 2015.

Juicy flavors of black cherry and blackberry enliven this racy red, with notes of balsamic and vanilla in a polished texture over light, firm tannins. Floral and spice accents linger on the finish.
