The Castello di Farnetella 2017 Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva shows some warmth with ripe summer cherry, wild plum, crushed flower and dusty earth or limestone. This vintage feels a little looser and leaner compared to some of the more recent releases from cooler vintages; however, this more accessible version would hold its own across from a home-cooked plate of crespelle alla Fiorentina.

The Castello di Farnetella 2016 Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva is a Sangiovese-based wine (the Tuscan grape is mixed with 10% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) that is steady and clean with all the selling points of a solid and food-friendly Tuscan red. The wine is refreshing, easy-drinking and well-priced. There are wild aromas of cherry, dried raspberry and spice spread over the wine's lean to mid-weight style. The only drawback is that production is small at 3,300 bottles released.

The Chianti Colli Senesi appellation rarely gets attention, but this wine should prompt a second look. The 2011 Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva is 90% Sangiovese with tiny parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is fermented in steel for a fresh and fruit forward approach and is later aged in large oak casks for a slow aging evolution. You really feel the Cabernet Sauvignon component in the warm 2011 vintage. The structure is firm and the wine is redolent of dark fruit and spice.
