A blend of 65% Sangiovese and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon (with 18 months in oak), the 2013 Il Querciolaia is a dark and penetrating wine from a cool and classic vintage. The wine boasts a wild and untamed side that reminds me of the wooded hills of the Greve in Chianti area of Tuscany. This is a solid and tightly knit wine that should benefit from a few more years of cellar aging. It still needs to flesh out and soften up. This is a medium- to full-bodied red with firm tannins and bright acidity at the back. Some 15,000 bottles were produced.

Made with 65% Sangiovese and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2012 Il Querciolaia is a big and powerful wine, for sure. You get loads of dark extraction and intensity here with a lavish presentation of dark fruit, spice and cured tobacco aromas. This was a warm vintage and the effect is a bit heavy, syrupy and sticky as a result. The finish is so extracted, you taste some bitterness as a result.

From the hills high above Greve in Chianti, the 2011 Il Querciolaia is another magnificently opulent wine from Castello di Querceto. This Tuscan red is made from a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is intense and well constructed with solid structure and enough fruit freshness to give it staying power and heft. The color is darkly saturated and thick. Sangiovese adds the acidity and a fruity signature to the finish. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds the muscle and the depth.

The 2007 La Querciolaia (Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon) is a huge, massive wine with little of the charm of the year. I have tasted very few 2007s with this amount of sheer tannin. It is hard for me to see this ever coming in balance. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022. These new releases from Castello di Querceto are a bit of a mystery. The 2006 La Querciolaia (Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese) is a huge wine. Blackberries, grilled herbs, graphite, menthol and tar are just some of the notes that flow from this massive Tuscan red. It shows fabulous balance and tons of potential for those who can be patient. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. Castello di Querceto is a fascinating property. The estate produces a number of single-vineyard wines. At their best, the wines can be fabulous, but the estate’s Achilles heel is consistency.
