A blend of Petit Verdot and Syrah, the 2016 Il Toro is a muscular animal that boldly exposes dark fruit, blackberry preserves, dried cherry, spice, leather and spicy cedar. The blend is unique because it pairs the volume and spicy intensity of Syrah with the density, darkness and structure of Petit Verdot. Softer aromas of sweet fruit cede quickly to tar, grilled herb and rich plum. Pair this wine with grilled T-bone steak. This is a bold and expressive wine that opens a new chapter for Filippo Chia and his talented team.

The 2009 Il Toro (equal parts Petit Verdot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon) delivers aromas of soft fruit and spice that are contrasted seamlessly against one another. The plushness is remarkable and the wine glides smoothly to the back of the mouth with soft, cushiony tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. Painter Sandro Chia and photographer Filippo are behind Tuscany’s most colorful, art-filled wine estate. A protagonist of the Transavanguardia movement, Sandro purchased the dilapidated Castello Romitorio outside Montalcino many decades ago (for a pittance, he tells me). He set up a studio for painting and sculpture, and eventually decided to make wine during the Brunello boom years. The real motor behind the estate today is his bi-cultural (Trasteverino-Manhattanite) son Filippo who brings an East Village vibe to the sleepy Tuscan countryside.
