The 2012 Morellino di Scansano is a full and generous expression from southern Tuscany with fine aromas of black cherry, Spanish cedar and mild tobacco. Sangiovese is blended with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is extra plush and soft on the finish with a touch of sweet vanilla spice and candied cherry. It’s an uncomplicated wine, but is nonetheless a pleasure to drink – especially at that low price. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016.
Painter Sandro Chia and photographer Filippo are behind Tuscany’s most colorful, art-filled wine estate. A protagonist of the Transavanguardia movement, Sandro purchased the dilapidated Castello Romitorio outside Montalcino many decades ago (for a pittance, he tells me). He set up a studio for painting and sculpture, and eventually decided to make wine during the Brunello boom years. The real motor behind the estate today is his bi-cultural (Trasteverino-Manhattanite) son Filippo who brings an East Village vibe to the sleepy Tuscan countryside. Hopelessly bitten by the winemaking bug, Filippo endeavored to add new Tuscan wines from Maremma to his portfolio of Brunellos.
