The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Edizione XXV Vendemmia is a special bottling made to celebrate the estate’s 25th harvest. In many ways, this wine captures the real issue with Brunello, as it represents what Brunello should be rather than what a special-label Brunello should be. Ripe dark cherries, tar, licorice, violets, minerals and smoke emerge from the glass as this big, strapping Brunello reveals its pedigree. This shows gorgeous inner perfume and more than enough density in the fruit to match the imposing tannins. It should develop into a splendid wine with a few more years of bottle age.
