A good lashing of new oak lends vanilla and resinous aromas and flavors to this red. Given some air, floral, sweet berry, mushroom and woodsy notes emerge along with an elegant, vibrant core. The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is less exciting than the estate’s 1999 Campo del Drago, although a shared philosophy is evident. The style is upfront and generous with layers of tobacco, leather, crushed mineral and cola. It has aged gracefully, incorporating an inner sense of balance and freshness. Drink: 2014-2022.
