A food friendly and organic wine, the 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo exhibits a medium dark color and concentration, which is a sign of this vintage that tended to produce very rich fruit. Cassis and cherry segue to black licorice and crushed stone. Fruit from this wine comes from various parts of the greater Bricco Boschis MGA. Production is an ample 17,333 bottles.

Made with organic fruit, the 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo is a release of 26,664 bottles that offer informality on the one hand and plenty of varietal purity on the other. This is exactly what a Langhe Nebbiolo should be; it proves easy-drinking and versatile no matter what food pairing you reserve for this cheerful bottle. The finish is tart and bright with wild rose, raspberry, cassis and sour cherry. Cavallotto does an excellent job of presenting the genuine side of Nebbiolo no matter what the price point of the wine.

With rose potpourri and dried rose, the Cavallotto 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo offers a light and accessible expression of the grape. The bouquet reveals cranberry, cassis and dried raspberry. This is a long and accessible wine to pair with a dish that involves cheese or cream. The tannins are nicely integrated and silky.

I tasted the 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo from vat but am giving it a final score because the wine had been taken out of wood and was just about to go into the bottle when I visited the estate. This wine shows deep, lasting and increased aromatic intensity that really points to the quality levels achieved with Nebbiolo in 2016. Bottle production of this wine is greatly reduced because more fruit was moved up to the production of top-shelf Barolo instead. The wine is compact, firm and tight, but it also offers lots of inner energy and brightness. Fruit from the youngest vines ends up in the Langhe Nebbiolo. Cavallotto plans to make greater volumes of this wine in 2017.

Cavallotto's 2015 Langhe Nebbiolo is a terrific wine available at a price point far below Barolo or Barbaresco. This is a simple and honest expression of the mighty Piedmont grape that delivers extra succulence and primary fruit. You will recognize aromas of black cherry and wild rose with some tangy spice on the close. This is an elastic wine in terms of bottle production. Because the fruit can be used to make Barolo, this wine fluctuates greatly in terms of numbers vintage to vintage. For example, 26,000 bottles were produced in 2015, but that was cut to 6,000 in the 2016 vintage. Cavallotto was so happy with the 2016 fruit, they happily made more Barolo instead. On the bright side, that means more high-quality Barolo fruit went into this 2015 Langhe Nebbiolo.
