This cooperative has a good track record of turning out value-priced reds from the St.-Joseph appellation. Given the explosively high prices encountered for most northern Rhones, it is rewarding to find wines of this quality at such reasonable prices.
The elegant 1998 St.-Joseph Cuvee Mariniers exhibits riper Syrah, a dark, saturated ruby color, good herb-tinged, blackberry, and cherry fruit, and excellent concentration, purity, and overall balance. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.
