Lightly peppery and spicy on the nose, the 2019 Cote Rotie Promesse is a supple, medium to full-bodied effort that's immediately attractive. Plums and black cherries ease into notes of mocha on the finish, framed by soft, elegant tannins. For having spent 14 months in 80% new oak, it's impressively well balanced.

At this stage, the 2017 Cote Rotie Promesse still shows some reductive aromas hinting at asphalt, plus dark-fruit notes of black olives and plums. It's medium to full-bodied and pleasantly ripe, marked by silky tannins on the finish.

Pichon's largest bottling is the most flattering to taste at this stage. With less new oak than the other cuvées (still a substantial 75%), the 2016 Cote Rotie Promesse boasts "wow" aromas of florals, spice, herbs and mixed berries. It's medium to full-bodied, with a creamy, plush mouthfeel and peppery spice on the finish.

Another impressive wine was the 2015 C?te R?tie Promesse, which reveals a deep ruby/purple color in addition to notes of black raspberries, cassis, sweet oak and crushed flowers. It’s rich and concentrated, with a solid mid-palate, but is seriously young and unevolved, so I suspect it’s going to need short-term cellaring.
