From vines planted in 1933, Pichon's 2017 Cote Rotie la Comtesse en Cote Blonde features an intoxicating bouquet of herb, violet and spice notes accenting purple raspberries. It's full-bodied, rich and plush, turning silkier and finer on the lengthy finish, where it picks up echoes of licorice, pepper and berries. Already approachable, it should drink well for 15 years or so. Impressive!

Pichon's oldest vines (planted 1933) are in the 0.45-hectare parcel that went into the 2016 Cote Rotie la Comtesse en Cote Blonde. It's 100% Syrah, but it's also his lightest, most elegant cuvée this vintage, blending raspberries, black olives and tar into a compelling glass of medium-bodied Syrah that should drink well for over a decade.

I thought the 2015 C?te R?tie La Comtesse C?te Blonde was terrific. It has a decadent, sweetly fruited, full-bodied style, as well as ample notes of cassis, black raspberries, dried flowers and crushed meats. It has a stacked mid-palate and is bordering on an Old-World fruit bomb.

My favorite of the barrel samples was the 2014 C?te R?tie la Comtesse C?te Blonde. Showing the vintage nicely with its charming, sweetly fruited and layered profile, it offers lots of spice, fruit tart, rising bread, and assorted raspberry and plum fruit notes. Possessing fine tannin and beautifully sweet fruit, it has just a touch of barrique showing, but this should integrate nicely once in bottle. Made from 100% Syrah, from one of the best terroirs in the appellation (the C?te Blonde lieu-dit), it was completely destemmed and will see 18 months in new French oak prior to bottling. It will have 15-20 years of longevity.

A smoking bottle of wine that impressed on all accounts, the 2013 C?te R?tie La Comtesse en C?te Blonde has soaring aromatics of black raspberries, violets, bay leaf, graphite and spring flowers. Made from 100% Syrah and aged 18 months in new oak, it has a touch more ripeness and depth than the Promesse, and offers medium plus-bodied weight, nicely integrated acidity and enough tannin to keep it drinking nicely over the coming 10-15 years.
