Subtle notes of dried strawberries and raspberries with red licorice, dark cedar, dried flowers and orange peel. Full-bodied, firm and slightly chewy with compact tannins and vivid acidity. Lingering, racy finish. Drink or hold.

The 2010 Barolo is a finely tuned and focused Nebbiolo without too many extra bells and whistles. The wine opens to a light garnet color and a bright appearance. The presentation is extremely elegant, streamlined and feminine. Background tones of tar, asphalt, pressed berry and cassis emerge slowly from the bouquet. In the mouth, this Nebbiolo is long and extra silky. I found this to be a very pleasing Barolo with near-term and immediate appeal.

Ciabot Berton’s 2008 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine laced with expressive red berries, crushed flowers and licorice. The 2008 impresses for its overall sense of balance, poise and harmony. In particular, the tannins are considerably more polished and harmonious than has been the case in the recent past. This is one of the very best Baroli I have ever tasted at Ciabot Berton. This red is reminiscent of autumn woods, with a leafy, humus-like aroma, but also offering mint and tobacco orbiting the cherry and currant flavors. The 2007 Barolo is an attractive wine laced with crushed flowers, spices and sweet red berries, all of which come together nicely on a refined mid-weight frame. The vibrant, silky finish is quite pretty. This delicate, approachable Barolo is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.
