The 2006 Langhe Rosso Monpra is a huge, massive wine that bursts onto the palate with tons of dark fruit, grilled herbs, spices, tar and graphite. This imposing red will require some patience but it is already a beautifully-balanced, harmonious and utterly delicious bottle of wine. The round, polished close is yet another sign that 2006 is an important vintage for Monpra. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.
Conterno-Fantino is without question one of Piedmont – and Italy’s – very finest producers. While the estate’s Barolos get most of the attention, readers will find the more affordable wines just as delicious. Unfortunately, this year I wasn’t able to taste the Barbera d’Alba Vignota and Langhe Nebbiolo Ginestrino, but in most vintages, they, too, are highly rewarding wines.
