The Conti Sertoli Salis 2011 Valtellina Superiore Riserva Corte della Meridiana shows some carefully aged aromas with dried fruit, cassis, tar, campfire ash and powdered licorice. The wine is silky with integrated and fine tannins that appear almost glossy or satiny now 10 years after the harvest. The front label reads Vino delle Alpi (or "wine of the Alps"), and that pretty much sums it up. This is an Alpine Nebbiolo with the freshness of the cool mountainous climate and a touch of inner Italian sunshine to pair with an après-ski aperitif of Taleggio and crackers.

The 2005 Valtellina Superiore Riserva Corte della Meridiana is a very pretty, mid-weight wine. Dried cherries, spices and herbs emerge from this delicate, ethereal red. Deceptively light in its weight, the wine possesses lovely inner perfume and just enough juiciness to balance the sweet, silky tannins. This is a lovely effort from Sertoli Salis. Sertoli Salis’ 2004 Valtellina Superiore Corte della Meridiana comes across as a hybrid of Nebbiolo and Valpolicella with the aromatics of the former and the sweet forward fruit of the latter. It offers a lovely core of ripe red cherries, flowers and mint on a somewhat compact, linear frame. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012. The Salis family is one of Valtellina’s historic, aristocratic familes. The estate releases a broad range of wines. The 2004 Valtellina Superiore Corte della Meridiana reveals lovely transparency in its ripe red fruit. With air the wine’s inner sweetness gradually emerges and notes of leather, spices and tobacco take on a more prominent role, rounding out the wine nicely. This medium-bodied red is best enjoyed over the next few years. The Corte della Meridiana is Nebbiolo made in the style typical of this region which calls for a portion of the fruit to be air-dried for a few months prior to vinification.
