From the Sondrio area of Valtellina (Lombardy), the 2017 Il Saloncello opens to a dry bouquet that is characterized by crushed slate and pencil shavings. There is very little fruit (despite the youth of the wine), and and what you do get resembles dried cranberry and tart cassis. This is a mid-weight wine with moderate length and depth.

The 2011 Il Saloncello is an IGT (Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio) expression of Nebbiolo from the Italian Alps in Lombardy. This is a tight and nervous wine that shows high levels of biting acidity and thorny tannins. The wine is best tamed with a food pairing that involves heavy cream or butter, because you need to soften those sharp edges with some healthy fat. Bright berry aromas are followed by white cherry and bitter cranberry. This is high altitude, mountaintop Nebbiolo in its purest state.
