The 2006 Valpolicella Superiore Mithas is a stunner. The overly heavy, rich style of past years is long gone in this exceptionally beautiful, polished wine. Layers of vibrant dark fruit caress the palate all the way through to the deeply satisfying, textured finish. Hints of French oak, licorice, violets and leather linger on the close. This is a gem from Corte Sant’Alda. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. This is a sublime set of wines from Corte Sant’Alda. The 2006 Amarone della Valpolicella Mithas is impressive. It boasts superb richness, density and length. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, herbs and licorice are some of the many notes that waft from the glass in this seriously intense, powerful wine. Licorice, tar and sweet herbs wrap around the finish. My impression is that the 2006 is still gaining on the upside. It will be a fascinating wine to follow over the better part of the next decade. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026. The estate’s top of the line 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Mithas is another explosive, full-throttle wine. Still quite primary, this powerful Amarone exudes masses of dark fruit intermingled with mint, smoke and sweet French oak. Today the wine remains incredibly tightly wound, but there is notable opulence, and the only thing this Amarone needs is a few years in bottle which will allow its inner sweetness to emerge.
