The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes has a very pure, mineral-driven bouquet with vivid red cherries and wild strawberry scents, just a touch of undergrowth and rose petals filtering through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well-judged acidity, structured and as a consequence quite Morey-Saint-Denis in style, with a marine-influenced, saline finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is excellent.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combottes has a reserved, slightly austere, earthy bouquet that needs more fruité to come through with aeration. It does begin to open in the glass however, offering Morello cherry and redcurrant jus. The palate is medium-bodied and quite fleshy in the mouth, supple with good acidity, tight at the moment, but there is sufficient substance on the finish to suggest that this will repay 5-7 years in the cellar. Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru aux Combottes has a slight reduction on the nose, but underneath lies pleasant dark berry, black plum fruit combined with damp undergrowth scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a brisk, quite pointed entry. The acidity is quite noticeable here, and perhaps it would have benefitted from more persistence, though it is redeemed by satisfactory energy and tension that will see it through. Patience required.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 2011 from Domaine d’Arlaud has a well-defined and vibrant, quite complex bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit to the fore, well-integrated oak, sous-bois and spicy notes developing soon after. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins. This feels a little rugged in the mouth, but not uncouth, with good acidity and “blocky” red berry fruit on the finish. Fine, but it needed more finesse to merit a higher appraisal.
