The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape offers delicious kirsch liqueur, garrigue, pepper and earthy notes in a classic, round, supple-textured, luscious style. One of the oldest continuous estates in Chateauneuf du Pape, Domaine du Pere Caboche is owned by the ebullient mayor, Jean-Pierre Boisson, whose relatives married into the Chambellan family in 1777! Boisson’s daughter, Emilie, is another of the many young women in charge of a Chateauneuf du Pape estate. This is a fruity, upfront Chateauneuf du Pape meant for consumers wanting immediate gratification as the wines are meant to be drunk when bottled, and generally last 6-10 years. (Although they could certainly make a longer-lived, more concentrated wine since their largest parcel of vines comes from famous rocky plateau of La Crau, near Vieux-Telegraphe.) The regular Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 80% Grenache and the rest other varietals, all aged in concrete and foudre. The old vine Elisabeth Chambellan from 80- to 100-year-old Grenache vines is composed of 70% Grenache and the rest various other red varietals. Both 2009s and 2010s are already delicious, sexy, upfront efforts.Importers: Monsieur Touton Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 255-2506; BBR, Houston, TX; tel.
