Bright, citrus, stoney and savoury. Textural, rich and long. A serious wine with some way to go.

The 2006 Sancerre Les Grands Goux displays lime and grapefruit zest on the nose and corresponding citrus on the palate, accompanied by subtle and attractive hints of mint, scallops and honey. The wine finishes with excellent focus for the vintage and an invigorating combination of zesty citrus and palpable mineral suggestions. The couple of more recent Fouassier cuvees I have had a chance to taste confirm (albeit in more challenging vintages) the quality consciousness evident in their 2005s (reviewed in issue 172).Importer: Bayfield Importing, Long Island, NY; tel. The 2005 Sancerre Les Grands Groux smells bracingly of salted lime, oregano and pennyroyal. Satisfyingly juicy, chalk- and herb-tinged, yet for all of its brightness of flavor curiously soft in texture, it finishes like a refreshing herbal inhalation.
