The 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums and cassis complemented by hints of sweet soils tones, cinnamon and other warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's elegantly rich, with fine concentration and a nicely defined finish.

Aromas of sweet berries, plums, dark chocolate and loamy soil introduce the 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots, a medium to full-bodied, layered and enveloping wine with an elegantly gourmand core of fruit that largely conceals its fine structuring tannins. This is a definite success.

The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru les Epenots displays more red fruit on the nose compared to the Pezerolles, Morello cherries and ripe strawberries, something almost summery evoked by the aromatics. Again, this is very well defined. The palate is well balanced and sturdy, with “serious tannins” as Jean-Pierre Charlot put it, more harmonious and persistent than the Pezerolles. This has great potential, maybe more than 2015 although just two barrels were produced.

The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru les Epenots is subtler and covets its secrets more than the Pommard les Pezerolles from barrel. Nuanced and unapologetically inward-looking at first, it begins to unfold with just a few swirls of the glass and eventually blossoms. It's just toying with you. The palate is sweet on the entry, a little more candied and generous than the Pezerolles, perhaps the vintage speaking more than the terroir at the moment. But I appreciate the light-hearted joie-de-vivre of this Pommard.

From the lieu-dit Petits Epenots, the 2014 Pommard 1er Cru les Epenots has a crisp, effervescent bouquet with red cherry and strawberry fruit interlaced with orange zest and cola. There is lots of energy here and that translates through onto the palate. There is plenty of fleshy ripe red fruit, a little tart compared to others, a very comely Pommard with fine precision if not quite the persistence on the finish.
