There is just a single cask of 2016 Savigny les Beaune Goudelettes. To be honest, the nose was missing some fruit and felt a little anonymous. The palate is better with light citrus fruit although it is missing the complexity and depth one usually finds with this cuvée.

The 2015 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Goudelettes has crisp citrus fresh, nectarine-scented bouquet that offers fine vigor. The palate is nicely balanced with fresh acidity, hints of clementine and citrus fruit with an elegant peachy finish. It was as disarmingly delicious in bottle as it tasted from barrel, the kind of white Burgundy you drink down to the last drop.

Back after being hailed off in 2013, the 2014 Savigny-les-Beaune Goudelettes is back. It has a reserved nose at first, but it opens to reveal subtle wet limestone and Granny Smith aromas. The palate is crisp and taut with good weight, precise orange zest and citrus notes with a lively, animated finish. This is a lovely white Savigny from Thibault Marion.

The 2012 Savigny-les-Beaune Goudelettes was a tiny production, reduced by over 60% due the myriad of disasters that struck the vineyard (incidentally, totally decimated by hail in 2013.) It has a nicely composed, featherweight bouquet that is well defined but does not quite offer the complexity of previous vintages. The palate has a spicy entry, a crisp line of acidity with a simple, fresh lemongrass-tinged finish. Fine. The small but very welcome expansion of the Seguin-Manuel “empire” continues unabated thanks to Thibaut Marion’s acquisition of a long-term lease of a considerable 1.8-hectares of Vosne-Romanee in “Au Commune”. Furthermore, 2013 will see more Cote de Nuits wines that will include a debut Echezeaux. All Thibaut’s 2012s were matured in cask this year and as he wryly put it, there was not need to retread over the catastrophes that affected his vines, like everybody else’s. As I have mentioned several times ever since this name was resurrected from history, Thibaut is a talented winemaker not just amongst those that enjoy his wines, but respected by many of his peers. They represent good value in the marketplace, even if I decided this time that he really should consider a more modern label. The 2011 Savigny-les-Beaune Goudelettes needs to muster a little more precision on the nose with light scents of grass clippings and green apples. The palate is better than the aromatics suggest with crisp acidity and a nice touch of fresh apricot on the finish, but it needs more personality and depth. Drink now-2016. I have written about Seguin-Manuel on many occasions, ever since a memorable tasting of ancient negociant vintages back in 2005 that elicited more perfect scores than any other (three to be exact.) Winemaker and proprietor Thibault Marion’s wines have little in common with those historical bottles, but he is carving a name for himself as one of Burgundy’s most thoughtful winemakers.
