Aromas of cloves, violets and dark berry fruit preface Monnot's 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Cents Vignes, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and inviting red that's built around a succulent core of fruit and fine, powdery tannins.

One of Monnot's most successful reds, the 2017 Beaune 1er Cru Les Cents Vignes bursts with aromas of ripe cherries, cassis, licorice and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and richly layered with a broad, lavish attack and a fleshy core, but succulent acids to balance the ripe fruit. This will drink very well on release, though I wouldn't expect it to make old bones.

The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Les Cents Vignes, of which 50% was affected by frost, has a lifted, floral bouquet with more black fruit than red, although I would like more delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied, underpinned by quite firm tannin at the moment. However, there is more fruit here than the Clos de la Fussière and I can see this all melding together with time. Fine.

The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Cents Vignes, which tends to produce small cluster and concentrated grapes, has a perfumed and quite floral bouquet with copious creme de cassis and blueberry scents - very sensual. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, succulent in the mouth with good backbone on the saline finish. I like this a lot and it might turn out to be the best release from Xavier Monnot in 2015. Recommended.

The 2014 Beaune 1er Cru Les Cent Vignes comes from a 1.5-hectare of vine planted 50% Riparia rootstock and 50% massale selection made by Xavier's father, which tends to ripen quickly and consequently tends to be the first picked. It has a slightly pinched bouquet at the moment with cranberry leaf, raspberry preserve and a slight tinniness. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy red cherry and cranberry fruit, slightly rigid tannin, but with a pleasing salinity on the finish. Rigid at the moment, time in bottle will just flex its muscles and it may merit a higher score down the line.
