The 2019 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Sp?tlese offers an intense and spicy bouquet with a remarkable botrytis or raisin tone on the concentrated and refined nose. Sweet, lush and dense on the palate and slightly bitter on the finish, this is a firm yet still astringent Doctor Sp?tlese that is difficult to tax. It has finesse and concentration, certainly more Auslese than Sp?tlese character and a long and intense finish, yet all the structural components are still separated. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

The 2018 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Sp?tlese is clear and flinty on the still-reductive nose with its tropical fruit aromas. Voluptuously lush and wide on the palate, with finely crystalline acidity, this is an elegant and refined yet pretty sweet Doctor with a piquant and salty-crystalline finish with grip and tension. A gorgeous Doctor—in 10 or 20 years. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Picked on October 19 and 20, the 2017 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Sp?tlese is deep and smoky on the rich and intense yet refined and crystalline nose. On the palate, this is a lush, highly elegant, refined and salty-piquant Doctor with crystalline structure and an unashamed juicy texture. The finish is tight, very long and tensioned as well as highly promising. Tased in March 2019.

The 2015 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Sp?tlese is deep, precise and flinty on the nose, with perfectly ripe tropical fruit and refreshing lemon aromas. Sweet, piquant and mineral on the palate, this is a fresh and grippy, vital and tightly woven Doctor, but for the moment, it does not develop the great tension and expression found in the dry counterpart.
