The 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo is not made from one vineyard site. Instead, it represents a marriage of bits and pieces from various sites farmed by this estate. Usually the fruit is taken from the outlying perimeters of each site, as the prized clusters from the more protected centers go to the top-shelf Barolo production. This wine offers less intensity as a result, with simple varietal-driven aromas.

The 2015 Langhe Nebbiolo is a food-friendly wine with an easy-drinking personalty. Some 30% of this Nebbiolo blend is made with the Rosé clone that is so light in color, the clusters look pink when they reach full maturity. In fact, the wine's color is impacted here. It boasts a light garnet or ruby shine. The wine is polished and clean with some drying tannins on the finish. The mouthfeel is compact and streamlined, but the wine ends with a pretty offering of wild berry and blue flower.

The entry-level 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo offers tonic, bright fruit in a simple context. The wine offers linear tones of cherry, wild berry and pressed blackberry with light accents of spice and tobacco at the back. It ages in neutral oak and the fruit integrity is very intact as a result. In the mouth, this easy Nebbiolo shows tight lines and refreshing acidity. The 2013 vintage is a promising one for this varietal.

Readers who want to get an early look at the 2010 vintage should check out Pira’s 2010 Langhe Nebbiolo, which is from Ravera, in Monforte d’Alba. Firm yet polished tannins frame a core of deep, resonant red fruit in this surprisingly structured, intense wine. Flowers, tobacco, mint and spices emerge over time, but in the end, the 2010 is a wine defined by its structure, length and pure class. The 2010 could use another year or so in bottle, but it is already incredibly delicious. I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. There have been times when the entry-level wines have been something of an Achilles heel at Pira, but those days thankfully seem to belong to the past. The 2009 Langhe Nebbiolo emerges from a parcel in Le Coste, one of the best-known vineyards in Monforte. It is a fabulous wine loaded with varietal character. Sweet red cherries, flowers and mint are some of the notes that flesh out in this rich, engaging Nebbiolo. A final burst of fruit informs the finish. This is a hugely delicious wine from Chiara Boschis that may end up surpassing many 2009 Baroli. It is that outstanding, Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.
