The 2010 Moscato d’Asti Clarte is another of Italy’s great dessert wines. Low yields and a superb site result in one of the most intense Moscati readers are likely to come across. It is not an understatement to say this is a wine that literally redefines what is possible with the grape. Exotic flowers, lime, green pears and the essence of crushed rocks flow effortlessly from this dazzling wine. The Clarte has the focus and cool, piercing minerality of a great Chablis, but of course with the sweetness of Moscato. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2013. The 2009 Moscato d’Asti Clarte' is a pure, crystalline Moscato laced with minerals, white peaches and jasmine. There is an energy and drive to the Clarte’ I find particularly appealing. The finish is impeccable and totally refined. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012. Proprietor Stefano Perrone makes reference-point Moscatos. The 2008 Moscato d’Asti Clarte is intensely mineral in this vintage, with a persistent vein of minerality that frames a core of silky ripe fruit. While not the most exuberant vintage of Clarte, the wine offers tons of elegance and balance. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2010.
