Heavier chalk-clay, humus-covered soils appear to promote fullness and fat in Triebaumer’s 2006 Blaufrankisch Gmark, which is raised in older 300-liter barrels. Fresh blueberry and blackberry lend a metaphorically “cool” fruit aspect, and it exhibits a breadth and a silkiness of texture quite distinctive from that of its lesser sibling but without that wine’s refreshment and invigoration. Quinine-like bitterness and an alkaline note inform the finish of this Blaufrankisch that may show more depth in another year of two, and could certainly be held for 4-5. The 2005 Blaufrankisch Gmark displays aromas of fresh blackberry tinged with iodine and mint, and underlain by damp earth. On the palate, this offers a good sense of richness, polished tannins, and excellent finishing clarity.
