It lacks the charm of what is clearly a better vintage, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (at $30 less a bottle, that’s worth noting). A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2007 is a winner. It is a luscious, sweetly tannic, classic Napa Cabernet offering notes of white chocolate, black currants and spice box, and a medium-bodied, supple, sexy style. Drink it over the next 7-10 years. This winery is forever associated with their Sauvignon Blanc program, which is one of the most successful in California. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is a solid value from Napa Valley. Earthy black currant and cherry fruit as well as hints of smoke and underbrush emerge from this superficial, but pleasant, monolithic red. Drink it over the next 4-8 years. Tel. (800) 929-2217

Some Cabs go into a dip at the age of five, and this may be one of them. It’s a little awkward in structure, with a sharpness of feeling, and the oak isn’t integrated with the ripe blackberry fruit. Could emerge and be fine in a couple more years.——S.H.(12/31/2008)—— 86
